Outdoor Christmas lights?

Do you have them?

  • They are tasteless and I prefer to sit in the dark reading dismal Victorian novels.

  • My home draws coach trips.

Modern lights, LED's much cheaper to run, I just haven't thrown the money at the problem yet. Waiting for the price to come down. Maybe after Christmas, I'll buy for next year. Neighbors have lights that flash in synch with radio broadcast emanating from the light set. Not in the tradition of the High Church, in my estimation.

What ever you say about the tasteless versions my kids used to love them when they were little and it used to be a good way of keeping them walking when they were small. Just yesterday I passed by an area that used to be prefabs and remembered that one of those used to go all out with Santa on the flat roof etc. I wonder where they are now?

They are generally tacky.

There used to be one near me that used to have a charity donation bucket outside. The dude was interviewed on local news and he happily stated that he'd raised over £3000 for good causes... in the next sentence he said it cost him over £5000 set up and power. Some bad maths there. Why bother? Just give the £5k to charity, and stop pissing your neighbours off

I do like this chap's efforts though

My Father(would have been 100 today) made some little scenes of times biblical, like Journey of the Magi, etc, and made them with a cut out foreground, middle, and background, with lights between the foreground and background. Stunning three dimensional effect. We had an enclosed front porch with about 6 of them, and it was very subtle and nice.

I was also taken with "toothpick cheer" further down the page

Love em, and it's my favorite time of the year to be out & about, seeing what the Christmas creatives have been up to...don't have em outside my own place, but if I had a house and an endless supply of cash, rather than a flat and an ever increasing credit card bill, then I surely would.

Edit - I can't vote, of course, as I fit into neither mould.

Won't anyone think of the enviromental harm caused by the energy needed to power these displays

It's minimal, seasonal, brings joy to the majority and is not worth getting on a high horse about.
The environment is not worth getting on a high horse about?

Well there we have it- all those other threads going on at length were pointless then

Racing motor cars, flying in aeroplanes, etc all bring joy to the majority who use them- so why are we worrying about them

The sort of things they inspired one to do.
I believe we built a pontoon boat from plans found therein,
just kids on the block, horsing around.
We launched it in the lake,
and it sank a while later.
We pulled it out and took it home to fix it,
parents laughing uproariously.
Bicycles were more our metier.

Nice poem. It reads like one anyway.
