As per the heading I am on Hotmail/Outlook Express.
I have suddenly received 2 adverts from companies offering to help with old car finance agreements.
They both have tags telling me they are ads.
I cannot see any way to delete them.
This has never happened before.
Any advice/suggestions ?

Leave them, they stay at the top, change frequently.
Afaik those ads are the price of the free mail app ^_^

Right, I will see if I can get used to them. Strange that it's never happened before though (or is this a new gimmick?
I've a feeling it's an attempt at getting round adblocking software, whilst ensuring there's a greater chance that they'll be opened by accident, simply because they're at the top when you go to your inbox.

Possibilities:

1. Use an app firewall to restrict domains Outlook Express is allowed to access

2. Often in-app ads are served from specific sub domains. Just block those domains in your DNS as they won't appear.

3. Just re-route the sub-domains serving the ads to 127.0.0.1 through local hosts file.

I don't know Outlook Express but certainly works on other platforms (as I hate ads and have done it). Probably other

Or just change to a better mail client.

Could be as when they first appeared I did click on them (that was all I did).

Adblock Plus on Chrome seems to do a good job of getting rid of them. I had to disable it and refresh to check they are still there on the standard page.

Apart from the ad emails, the mail client that comes with windows is acceptable. I just ignore the spam. Others may have lower tolerance. In that case either pay to remove ads or use a different mail client.

As for ad blockers, I use a PiHole. It's not subject to Google's extension blocking and covers every device on my home network.
