Photography is not beautiful or a game. It is a sickening spectacle of obscene wealth, on- and off-camera violence, cheating, blackguardry and over-indulgence. It is poisoning our public life.

Sound familiar?...

If they get switched on by accident, I have to get the manual out to find out how to switch them off.

I reckon that's the nub of it... the sodding manual! Who really can be arsed reading them? They invariably don't tell you what a function does or is meant for, just how to use it. Nothing more than a picture of a menu that says 'thingamy setting' with some text along the lines of 'select this option to set the thingamy setting'.

I have a lumix something or other. I just wanted something cheap, little enough to cart around on the bike and take decent pics with... the lumix got good reviews so that was decision made. The manual (in a dozen languages, one of them might as well not have been English!) got flicked through and put back in the box. Praps, one day, if I want to photograph a squirrel's sphincter at midnight as I pass it at mach one, then I might might read the manual in the forlorn hope that there's a 'mach one midnight squirrel sphincter' setting... but until then 'point and push the button' will do me.

I have a Fuji S5700 camera. 7.1mp ( but the quality is great )
Some purple edging on higher ISO settings....but still great. ;)

Takes excellent pics. It has all the settings someone like me would ever need and has a quality Fujinon lens.
The auto mode is excellent...dial setting for the mode required and bobs yer uncle.
It got very good reviews and I thought it'd be a great step up from my previous cheap 4mp camera.
The manual is very good too......but all you need to know is on screen.
Well chuffed with it.

I have owned a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ-7 for about a year and I quite like it. However it has functions and controls I will never use; I don't even know what the joystick button is for. Why can't somebody make a simple, robust outdoor use digital camera but spend the money on about 8mp, a fantastic lens and not much more than the few simple functions, which used to be sufficient when we used 35mm? My only real requirement is a wide zoom range because I take lots of landscapes and I like the compressing effect of a zoom. Oh, and a camera that's compact, lightweight and robust.

Like Alec said use the Heart mode RR - it works well in the main. I have had a Lumix FZ-5 since July 2005, & use P, A & S modes in the main; I never touch the scene modes. I always set ISO80, and use this if at all possible - to avoid noise. The heart mode will auto ISO and so noise will sometimes be an issue. I love the 3fps mode, the fast focus, the v.quick flash recycle, the lens range and quality, and fairly compact size. I also use the autoexposure bracketing quite a bit, to make sure I don't burn out highlights. The flash power control is useful for fill in flash, to give portraits outdoors a bit of a lift.

My SLR kit hasn't been used since I got the FZ5 - but I may be venturing into dSLR territory in the near future, and should be able to resurrect my old manual focus lenses. ;)

I've got A Fuji S9600 thingy after my well researched Minolta Z3 was trashed by the kids - busted the zoom mechanism..... well dis-chuffed - 12 X optical zoom in a so called compact camera - yes was only 3 mega pixel at the time, but it was fast, compact (ish) and great. The new Fuji is a 9 mega whatsit and is awesome, and gobbles 2gb cards........

Got the 9600 recently as a replacement, it's a super fast camera but it's big - SLR size, but it does more than I have tried to use - I need to go on a course, this is one thing I can't work out ......... F stops and stuff....I've read a few books but it does not sink in......
