As fast as you can, looking as relaxed as you can, and (very important this) shouting "LOSER....LOSER" Jeremy Clarkson-stylie. Carry on.

I have done that and then huffing and panting thought "Why doesn't the idiot just pass me".

Do you have a nice bum?

Maybe the idiot wanted a just reward for his nicety.

At this time of year its hopefully hidden under lots of layers ...

I dont think there is any etiquette on my commute for this! too much variety of rider

I have noticed on sportive type rides, that people often say good morning when passing to make a point!

Jokey ones aside, and speaking as one of the 'victims', any of the suggestions on this thread are OK.

In fact just pass me or any other slower cyclist, safely, and don't bother yourself about any of the silly 'etiquette' stuff. It really doesn't matter. I'm not expecting an 'excuse' from any cyclist who overtakes me, nor is anyone else of my pace.

I don't think this thread serves any useful purpose.

I do not get this - what is here to think about - if you are going faster you overtake - if slower then they disappear into the distance - it would seem that there is almost a mindset among cyclists that they get home and chalk their scalps on the wall - reminds me somewhat of the mindset of a lot of drivers

Having been warped (warpee) and warped a few (warper), I still think it's nice to utter a 'good evening' or 'goodmorning' at the point of passing.

[Grimace] That would make me unbearably hacked-off if overtaken.

Scalping only counts if the other guy is going for it as well!

Overtaking, simply make triple sure you have space, time & stamina to make the move & make it stick then overtake giving a reasonable distance for the other cyclist. Shoulder check once you're passed to make sure you're properly clear of the other cyclist & they've not accelerated to keep with you. With that done continue your ride.

Only time I'd talk to another cyclist is if I knew them, else it can be seen as an antagonistic form of one-upmanship.

Free-wheel past. Its the only way. Even when going up-hill. If you can't free-wheel past, then don't bother trying to overtake.
That's tongue-in-cheek right, if it's not it's complete & utter cobblers! The power difference between me doing 8 & 10mph on a 5% hill is the best part of 30% but that 2mph difference will not let me pass them by free wheel but I'll almost certainly leave the rider doing 8mph behind. Same for the step up from 20 to 23mph, that's a big step up power wise & while a rider may be able to take my wheel they may well not be able to hold that sort of speed for any reasonable distance solo. In both examples sure I could sprint but I don't want to sprint I want to cruise so why should I not overtake someone I'm blatantly stronger/wanting to ride faster than?
