I flick the frame tubes with a fingernail to see what sound it makes..... tyre squeezing is pretty normal

[Alan Partridge mode on]: Car tyres aren't anywhere near as porous as cycle inner tubes of course, check them at pre-MoT time and they're often the same as that same time last year. [/Partridge mode off]

As for squeezing: I squeezed my hybrid tyres the other day and they seemed absolutely fine, but connecting them up to the track pump told me I had 50 PSI in a tyre that should be nearer 100psi. Either I'm not a good squeezer, or squeezing is no judge of correct pressure. Could be both I suppose. Either way, I trust my pressure gauge more than I trust my sausage fingers.

I can't get on my bike without giving the tyres a squeeze. Am I alone in this? I have never had this desire with cars. Do I need professional help?

Thank god it was only your tyres.

Can't say I do unless it's a bike I haven't ridden in a while and they'll probably need topped up anyway.

Otherwise you'll know soon enough if it's flat!

I always squeeze 3 times.

Surely that's over-processing, you've wasted 2 squeezes where 1 would suffice.

So, 2 extra squeezes, 2 tyres (assuming you're not on a unicycle) 4 squeezes per ride extra. Let's say you ride 5 days a week and have done so for 10 years, that's 10400 superfluous squeezes each taking 1/2 second which equates to 1 hour, 26 minutes and 40 seconds of your life you've wasted unnecessarily squeezing bicycle tyres.
