Imperial and Brunel were the best places to get offers from, at the time, for Mech Eng and I really wanted one or the other so getting both offers was fantastic. Then I got offers through clearing for Middlesex, Cambridge, Woolwich, and some others. Cambridge would have been fun just for the atmosphere and kudos but my folks really pressured me into taking Middlesex as it was the closest and meant I wouldn't have to rent digs and associate with people who drink and have a good time. Also Cambridge wasn't offering the Mech Eng, can't remember what it was but it wasn't for me.
I think the problem was that my brother, previously, had moved to Coventry to do Electrical Eng and our folks only saw him when he needed laundry doing. And that's the way it should be really.

It's weird what parents take into consideration when you are applying to uni, isn't it - I think it might be because they never went themselves and so didn't really know what it was FOR.

Hehe, sounds like a common thing with Asian families as well. Parents wanted me to stay in Sheffield, but I went to Salford Uni. I think there's even more pressure on Asian girls to stay in their hometowns for the reasons you've already mentioned.

It could have been the other way around though, Dad left home early on and then left the country at an early age for personal reasons and Mum escaped revolution and war to end up half way around the world, again, at an early age. Maybe because they both missed their familes so didn't want me to leave them.
My brother was just more stubbon about it I think, and maybe also hid the other offers that were closer to home.

That's quite moving.

Mine just didn't have the foggyiest and my mum cried for the fortnight before I went begging me to give up my place and stay at home.

I have never felt so relieved to get out of a place asI was wehn I left home.

Thinking back, had I been living away from home it is likely I wouldn't have left my degree course to return to run the family Elec Eng business after my brother died. I could have finished and returned much later on as a qualified and experienced Mech Eng and made a lot more of it then I did at the time.
In the meantime I have graduated from Central Lancs and East London in completely differnt disciplins and still wondering about the Mech Eng.

I guess that is one of the things I have missed on. I've never lived on my own for more then a few months.

Very sorry to hear about your brother. That must have been devastating.

Cambridge don't do clearing. They have many times more qualified students applying than they have places especially in Engineering where they are in the top two or three in the country.

My school teachers encouraged me to apply for Oxbridge, but I didn't, as I had a massive 'class' chip on my shoulder. Then after leaving the decent uni I went to (I left after 6 weeks, deciding i didn't like the course) I lived with my g/f and went to one of the cr@ppiest colleges there was, and then split up ith the g/f after a bit. Oh, the opportunities I wasted...
