Well, our first and last time ! My wife and I had an oyster each at the weekend , 24hrs later we were fighting over the toilet ! Grim , only recovered now . Didn’t know you got Norovirus from shellfish but there ya go !

Ps I found them quite horrible anyway .

The last time I had oysters I ended up the same as you for a few days. I'm not going back despite quite liking them. No food is worth the risk of a few days of discomfort.

Yeah, I've eaten quite a lot (most often on the return trip on a Brittany Ferry with a nice Sancerre and good bread, on the sun deck), and am an expert oyster opener, but I know that those who have been got by Vibrio parahaemolyticus understandably would never touch them again.

We went to an oyster restaurant last year because I'd never tried them. They were ok but not my favorite. The seawater inside was also not very appealing. We had 3 each; plain, soy and ginger, and some sort of spicy sauce. Very over rated imo

I remember a rather alarming stat regarding oysters and Vibrio Unpronouncablyticus (or maybe something else)... one in nine oysters were found to contain it. It's probably a huge over exaggeration but of the ten or so of us tucking into the oysters that night, it was only me who was unlucky.

I suspect it varies depending on the source (if not the sauce) and the time of year. I've only eaten ones from Brittany when there wasn't an R in the month. I'd not eat ones from the Exe ONO, especially now given the parlous state of sewage discharge into UK rivers.

Indeed, shellfish is a high risk food, carries all sorts of nasties.
In Mediterranean countries cholera outbreaks due to shellfish consumption used to happen often.
I think nowadays there are more stringent food controls.

One of those foods you love or hate, personally I prefer my food dead and cooked. Apart from steak tartare

Only had oysters twice, the second because I forgot what the first was like. Ok but I prefer pickled cockles or moules. Picked cockles or even pickled mussels in a jar are my guilty pleasure. I hide a jar in the fridge occasionally and sneak a few out for a couple of days.

They've all never made me ill at all. Other more common foods do though often!
