They deserve to sink without a trace for what they have done to their staff today.

I worked for P&O cargo division at sea, from 1978 tob1981. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with them, but that was then and this is now. They weren't owned by Dubai oil sheikhs in the 70's for starters.

Trying hard to avoid politics here, but my understanding is that in the UK it is illegal to make any worker redundant if their job still exists. Obviously, in this case, bringing in agency workers shows that the jobs DO still exist.

However, are any of P&O's ships still registered in the UK? I think at least some of them are flying under flags of convenience, e.g. Nassau, Bahamas. In that case, do UK employment rules apply? Probably not....

Just been checking...
The 2 ferries that operate between Stranraer and Larne are registered in Nassau, Bahamas.
The 2 newest ferries on the Dover/Calais run are registered in Cyprus. They are named Spirit of France, and ironically, Spirit of Britain.
Not sure about their other ferries, but doubt very much that they will be British registered.

It was a commercial decision. It is clearly easier to sack U.K. staff as oppposed to their French counterparts whom none have been sacked.

This will save them lots of money to keep their business afloat. However I suspect the huge amount of badwill will hurt their profit. It all depends on how much the country cares and how long we remember

Don't think there's any ferry sailing from the UK registered in the UK at present.

They now sail under the Cypriot flag.

They were one of the ways to visit my parents in York without faffing about in London, but it looks it's back to Eurostar, as I'm not keen on supporting this, especially as they managed to pay a massive dividend last year according to the article.

I was hoping to take a bike next time as well...

From the BBC webpage
the company had told him it will be suspending services for "a week to 10 days while they locate new crew" on the Dover to Calais, Larne to Cairnryan, Dublin to Liverpool and Hull to Rotterdam routes.
I very much hope the service is suspended for much, much longer than that - due to the great difficulty in their ability to locate new passengers ...
