update: the rucksack idea seems to work ok, so will stick with it until i feel pannier is an absolute must.

i'll go back to the rucksack on my back in winter, one more layer of warmth on my back.

One of my friends has been commuting with a rucksack strapped to a rack for years. If it's working for you, spend the money on something else!

Me too. I've used them in heavy rain and they were totally waterproof. Not sure what they'd be like on a longer journey though - mine was only 4 miles so any longer and maybe the water might start to penetrate.
