Panniers on Road Bike

Hello All...

I started cycling to work in Jan of this year. I started on a alu framed rigid mountain bike and until an enthusiast at work convinced me that life would be easier on a road bike. I got hold of a second had lighweight road bike.

I am beginning to get tired of a sweaty back carrying cloths and laptop in a rucksack but my frame is definately not set up to carry a regular pannier rack.

I am looking at buying a seatpost mounted rack to take a laptop and a change of cloths... approx 10kg.

Does anybody have any recommendations of a rack and has anybody experienced difficulties with the ride and balance of the bike post upfit??

+1 I only found this out about 2 days ago! It will solve my commuting problem for the moment as well.

I would wholeheartedly not recommend a seatpost-mounted rack. especially not for 10+kg

It depends on how long your commute is but I would think the best idea would be to lighten your load!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YES.

I stopped using paniers and reverted to a rucksack. The balance of my roadbike was terrible. Felt really bad, especially on corners. I could I suppose have tried to even it out with 2 paniers, but then they'd each have only been 1/4 full and that was just as silly.

A racktop bag balances well, but doesn't tend to have enough space. A properly set up rucksack is best. You do get a sweaty back, but a shower/change of clothes soon sorts that, and the ride is much much better.

Best of all if you can manage not to bring anything with you of course, but for a commute that gets difficult.

All in my opinion of course, your milage may vary - depends on your bike and load and paniers and rucksack.

Combo of an old style saddle bag and bar bag? Each could be quite small then. Just a suggestion so don't flame me .

+1 to Crankarm's suggestion. As a variation I use one of these from Carradice which fixes to your seat pin. I can carriy a small laptop and a change of clothes in it.
