A friend of mine had 2 jobs about 20 years ago.
One wage was going in her bank account, the other was the old fashioned pay envelope.
Last year she decided to clean out a wardrobe: stuck in a corner there were £3000 pounds worth of wages in little brown envelopes, out of currency of course.
The bank teller laughed when they put the cash in her account, apparently it's not unusual

That’d be worth £5,200 in today‘s money, just from inflation. It’d be about £9,100 had it been left in an account paying 3% interest.

I worked the early shift for a while on Sundays, was in the shop before 0600 sorting out the bags for the rounds. Then deliver some papers on the way home (making sure to bang some gates as I did).

The owner would sell me cigs if there was no one in the shop. L&B normally. Got about £15 for the 2 hours or so work in a morning, was actually the best paying job I had for several years for the time spent Vs money earned. Only downer was being up at 0530 every Sunday
