Apparently it's illegal to cycle on certain parts of the common and the parks police were giving out tickets to unwitting cyclists today.

Fortunately I spotted the mele and hopped off in time to just get a wry smile from a copper rather than a fine.

Seems a bit harsh to do people for cycling on a wide expansive and above all practically empty common.

It is clear which parts of the Tooting Bec Common cyclists can use though. It's also good to remind cyclists that it is not wise to cycle fast on these shared paths.

The Parks Police do this every few months or so - they also come down hard on people having BBQs on the Common!

Does seem a little harsh, but, for them to go to this extreme I suspect something nasty has happened in the past that has prompted this action. I'm pretty sure the polixce would rather invest what little time and resource they have catching real criminals.

I wonder what they would do if you just rode off, they've got no means of identifying you after all.....Bandit Bikers!!

Nope. They'll have had a load of complaints about twats on BMX behaving like pricks and spoiling people's enjoyment of the park over the weekend, so they have decided to get heavy with a nice soft target i.e. middle-class, law-abiding commuting cyclists who are trying to get to work early in the morning. The sort of people who will stop, give correct details and pay the fine, rather than gob in their face, yell "F*ck off, gevva" and scarper. Fairly typical police response, I'm afraid - go after the trouble-free law-abiding middle class.

Jonny, they are Parks Police - it is there job to enforce bylaws (they only get involved in general law matters when it happens during the course of the their duties).

On some days, the PP will get you for walking with more than 4 dogs on the common without a licence!

Sad, but most probably true. I often feel "targeted" by the fact that i am most likely to put my hand up to my heinous crimes, such as cycling on an open common., rather than just taking "the fifth" and legging it.

It's the opposite. Compaints in the morning rush hour when parents and kids are travelling to the school/nursery and getting buzzed by cyclists (I know, I have attended meetings over the years).

"When are you going to do something about the cyclists? One of them didn't pay attention when I was opening the door of my X5 outside the school to let Lucien and Miranda out, and caused a lot of damage to my 4x4. I had to wait until he was out of hospital before I could claim for the repairs to my door. He wasn't even wearing a helmet!"

Don't let an inconvenient truth get in the way of your satire, 20"!
