is it just a threaded axle, each rear wheel will just slot on and be held on with (probably) double nuts locking against each other.

Hi there are no nuts there is an Allan bolt,I dont want to undo it until I know it is safe.

What is your reason for wheel removal? Is it to fix a puncture? It's quite possible to take the tyre and tube out without removing the wheel. It's one advantage of having a trike.

Where in relation to the axle and wheel is the Allen bolt?
Sideways on, in a collar, it might be acting as a locknut in place of a castle but and split pin.

It's screwed into the end of the axle.
Usually a sealed bearing, not cup and cone.

Appears to be the same fitting that were used on my Pashley trike. A neater solution than a hexagonal bolt.

Of course it's safe, it how you take the wheel off.
It isn't going to explode.

if its say 8mm you can use a 5&3mm jammed together

How do you get the other wheel off? No Allen key or bolt fixing.
