My late Uncle Walter used to "brag", that he'd never taken/passed the driving test.
He learned to drive a tank during WW2 and was given exemption for a car.

As a young fellow I dated a lass who's Dad was rather old to have a daughter of her age, and he pre dated the need for a driving test at all.

And it showed.

My Dad was given a licence from the Army so never took a test.

I remember when learning my instructor came out one day when it was snowing heavily, when I expressed some trepidation at going out and he asked me "What are you going to do after you pass, stay at home?". I went out and all was well.

I took my track license for CVR'T. Left turn, right turn, traffic lights and a roundabout. That was the easy bit. The real test was off road.

Never had that, but I used to live on a cul-de-sac off a cul-de sac, so clearly the roads were never gritted in winter. So when it was icy I used to slam the brakes on ready for our turning, lose grip, release the brakes, and then brake more gently and turn, just so I got used to the feeling of losing control and then being aware of what I need to do to get it back again.

I passed my test 40 years ago. All we had to do then was drive between two cows without hitting either one.

1976, I had around 8 lessons at a mix of £1.80 and a bank breaking £2.20 per hour then the test. I was asked three signage questions, one of which i got wrong..and passed first time .

So roughly getting my licence cost around a weeks wages. How much now ?

My Dad was a RoSPA trainer/observer and taught me to drive, so just the cost or the fuel.

Lord only knows what it'll cost today. Thousands of pounds spent to entitled a driver to spend the rest of their life paying loans.

Driving lessons are around £30 per hour for professional

I taught my daughter to drive with a few 'professional ' lessons to teach her the routes in the test area.

My sister in law who is Australian, said young drivers have to have at least 125 hours of driving experience before being allowed to take their test.

We totalled up my daughters hours, it was easily 150 hours of driving before her test date arrived- she passed first time with 1 minor
