Lord only knows what it'll cost today. Thousands of pounds spent to entitled a driver to spend the rest of their life paying loans.

The only time I've taken out loans to buy a car was when I was an instructor myself, and that was a business expense. Otherwise all cheap and cheerful cash sales.

And if you do need a loan, so what? Long as you can afford it go for it.

I've got no problem with that, so long as they don't moan they're skint or that they can't retire from work until they're eleventy-six. Which most of them do.

It's their choice - own it, don't moan it.

PS, loving the new low calorie user name.

My late Uncle Walter used to "brag", that he'd never taken/passed the driving test.
He learned to drive a tank during WW2 and was given exemption for a car.

An older pal of mine had a similar story. He needed a driving licence, I think during the war, and they'd suspended tests for the duration, and you just filled in a form where you ticked the box for the vehicle category you needed. He realised he might as well tick every box, and the very comprehensive licence arrived without needing any test at all. I think he was a civilian (presumably a reserved occupation of some sort) rather than in the army

I also seem to remember a strange situation when my dad was learning to drive in 1956.

It was the Suez crisis and petrol shortages. But learner drivers didn't need to have an experienced driver with them.

It was also the time of the "Ten Year Test" (MOT).

Father in law Mk1 got his licence without a test during service in WW2.

A cousin in Ireland got his licence without a test in the seventies. Driving examiners were on an eighteen month long strike and all provisional licence holders were upgraded to full because the backlog was so long. His wife missed out because she'd let hers lapse.

Saw a video by an American that lives over here and does stuff about the difference in uas and uk, the driving test over there is driving around a car park...they were told here when they had lessons they basically needed to start from scratch as they couldn't drive.
I got my Pennsylvania license without even getting in the car. The lady at the DMV saw the "endorsements" on my UK license and thought they were for being a good driver so just ticked all the boxes and gave me the license ^_^ ^_^

The hazard perception test strategy was the thing I had to work at, knowing how it works and having a plan to stand a good chance of landing a click in the higher-scoring bit. Also I had to bone up on motorway stuff because that's a bit outside of the cycling experience.

Are you taking in Boundary Way's new dutch roundabout on your commuting route?
