I agree lovely voice, but when she left, it started to go down hill. She was the other important half of the vocals IMHO. She had a certain something in her voice to counterbalance Heaton. Oh well, nice while it lasted. Woman in the Wall was one of my many favourites.

I guess you're right. Welcome to... and 0898 were my favourites. And I only really liked Quench as an album other than those - though good tracks on others. His solo stuff is well worth a listen.

It is no rumour - I have spoken to him. The tour is starting off at the Rovers Return on the ITV set. The tour is in May and the rest of the dates will be announced shortly.

Coming anywhere near the Midlands do you know?

Always been a fan myself - but prefer the earlier stuff. Briana was good, as was the second female singer, Jackie Abbot. The later albums had one or two good tracks on each. The cover album, Golddiggas and Headnodders was unusual - my favourite being This Old Skin, just looked it up on Wiki and it seems it was actually an early track of theirs.

You mention about him sharing the wealth, I watched a documentary on him a few years ago, I recall he shared equally with all members - regardless of who wrote the songs etc, seems pretty grounded.

Many years ago I went to see The Beautiful South at Wembley Arena IIRC. The warm up band were the Grimethorpe Pit Colliery band who were ace. They played for ages. Eventually TBS came on and they were awful. I didn't realise at the time but I think Heaton was bladdered. He was singing totally off key and staggering around the stage. Anyway after about 20-25 mins they went off, well there were quite a few boos (not booze, Heaton was the one who had had a skinful) and the Grimethorp Pit Colliery Band came back on, played some of the TBS tunes. They were brilliant. TBS didn't come back on. That was that. Still like the TBS though but haven't listened to their music for years. Paul Heaton is a strange chap. I think drink might have got the better of him on a few occasions. Still all geniuses are flawed in some way.

My ex wife worked with a bloke who unknowingly played in the same five a side team as Paul Heaton for over a year before mentioning to another team mate that "He looks a bit like . . . "

Paul Heaton is a strange chap.

From the little I know of him he is a strong character, and there are those who do not like him. I chatted to him a few times in Hull pubs and he was always a decent down to earth bloke - nice to talk to.

I watched him and his boys have a drunken fight once with another band back in the Housemartins era. My loyalties were very divided. I loved the Housemartins but had a mate in the other band. Decided best option was to wade in....

Apparently he has mellowed - I think he is a dad now and all that wild stuff is behind him.

I read elsewhere that he proposed route, after the Rovers Return, was to include Otley and they were asking for good venues to play in the area - that would be superb for us (or should that be Superbi!) Gives us something to look forward to while it's flippin' snowing again!

I used to love The Housemartins back in the late 80s. I wasn't so keen on The Beautiful South, but then I missed Stan Cullimore's guitar licks. I always found Paul Heaton's lyrics an odd mix of smooth and bitter. I remember either Simon Bates or Dave Lee Travis criticizing The Housemartins for failing to appear on The Brits or some other corporate music gong show in favour of an already scheduled gig. He was saying if The Bangles could fly in from America, why couldn't The Housemartins show up? Total lack of understanding, which didn't surprise me at all.

I saw the Beautiful South at Sheffield Arena in 1992. Heaton's auditorium-filling a cappella rendition of Let Love Speak Up Itself lives with me to this day. I liked Rotheray and Corrigan's duets but neither of them could hold a candle to Heaton's vocals.

A cycling pub tour? In Yorkshire? With Paul Heaton? Sounds like My Idea Of Fun.
