Last night, just before I went to bed, I received an email from Paypal regarding a money dispute for a transaction that took place just over a year ago. I did not remember the transaction but luckily I found a bunch of emails relating to this transaction and that helped me to remind myself of what the transaction was about.
I wrote to this buyer and asked him to read through our conversation and then stop this unauthorised transaction which I'm sure the guy just forgot about. Still waiting for his reply.
The good news for me is that I used Parcel2Go to send the parcel and I still had the email with tracking number and all, which still shows details of delivery etc. I use the post office most of the times and I always throw away the paper with the tracking number once the delivery has been made. I wont be doing that again.
So I responded to the dispute and added the tracking number and Parcel2go.com (not one of the recognised delivery companies they use). Added a few lines explaining about the transaction and what the error was. This morning I woke up to an email saying Paypal had completed the investigation and to check my account. I was sure they had ruled in my favour but not. The process is fully automated and a computer had made the ruling. Since Parcel2go was not one of the listed companies I think the system could not check the tracking details hence it ruled against me.
I had to phone in and arrange to upload a screen-dump of the delivery notification, they were no interested in checking the website themselves neither in any questions of why a person had not dealt with it from the start, in other words, pretty rude.
The good news is that after seeing the proof (screen-dump) they reverted their ruling BUT and this is a huge BUT, who keeps tracking numbers for a year? I was just lucky that I sent the parcel through a company that still has records online.
I'm annoyed at Paypal for ruling against me without even looking at the evidence. In other words, if you don't use DHL, Royal Mail, etc and keep the record of the tracking number then you are in trouble. So, do not throw away your tracking number of you might be for a nasty surprise one day.
Also, they say you can dispute a transaction up to one year and this transaction was 1 year and 9 days ago.
I'm sure there are unscrupulous people out there taking advantage of this.
I'm now considering to let a national newspaper have the story to warn the public. I have all the evidence in my favour and yet I ended up with a ruling against me. If there was a real person behind the dispute investigation then such ruling would not have been reached and the proof of that is that the ruling was reverted once I had the chance to communicate with a person.
So the lesson is:
When receiving payment through paypal:
Use some kind or recorded delivery
Take a screen-dump of the delivery status and keep it, together with tracking number FOR ONE YEAR OR MORE.
If the ruling goes against you then phone in and speak to a real person.
