Never seen any problems with Cyclogs totals, it's a surprise to hear people saying there have been probs.

Well done Helen (my namesake!), I think increasing your average speed is one of the harder things to do. Mine is going down now I'm doing more miles as I'm having to take it easy, plus my routes tend to include more hills. The thought of having average speeds like Aran20 or Joe24 is just pie in the sky for me!

My average speed hasn't increased but it's quite interesting the amount of variation on the same or similar routes.

Well I hit the magic 13mph average exactly on the way home tonight! I remembered half way home that I'd given my bike a good clean and oil on Sunday. Maybe that helped:blush:. It definitely felt much smoother.

I think I spoke too soon about Cyclogs. It doesn't seem to want to load at the moment.

Am I doing something wrong here, I restart my average for the journey when I am setting a time, yesterday I posted a 17.5 mph average over 7 miles, I was tanking on, today 16 mph average for both journeys.

Are you guys recording yours on a rolling average, i.e. leaving the average going over the weeks, I find after a while it gets kind of irrelevant as a measure of performance if you leave it too long, didn't bother over the winter and it was reading 12.8 mph.

My commute probably lends itself to higher averages being free of traffic lights, realivtively short, couple of junctions but generally country lanes with a few small hills to keep it interesting.

I am 38, probably 2 to 3 stone overweight, am on a Cannondale Bad Boy 700, Rack and Panniers now with the slicks back on and that made a difference over the trail type tyres as did a change to more snug fitting clothes.

Am I actually going fairly fast or am I recording it wrong ?

I take mine from my Garmin GPS which I have set to stop recording time when I'm stationary (i.e. at traffic lights) but which starts recording again when I move. The basic Lidl cycle computer does the same thing and they mostly agree.

I just record what my computer says, it stops ticking over if I stop moving but that's pretty rare on my commute.

Agree to a point with what Jim says but, at the lower level, we're not talking about taking risks. For me it's just the idea of pedalling more, less coasting and a bit more effort.

My average speed resets itself when I reset the trip distance, which I do twice a day when I'm commuting.

I used to but it meant I had to record two trips so just leave the comp for the day and reset after I've recorded. I keep a spreadsheet as well, just in case Cyclogs goes pearshaped.

I was always disappointed if I didn't do (or around) my PB every day and I think this, along with a seat that was too low meant that I stopped enjoying riding. I'm now trying to focus on increasing the mileage I'm doing but enjoying it more (going slightly slower and taking little notice of my speed).

The weather definitely helps - I did two fast times yesterday as there was very little wind (that's me not taking much notice of my speed).

Quite a few people on Cyclogs! I saw there's a Cycle Chart team, not sure I should join being soooooo slow as I am...I also don't use a compter, just (ahem) a watch, so I've no idea of my fastest speed or averages or anything, oher than what the site works out for me.

I've got a bit faster since I started logging on there, but not much  Maybe once I've sorted out the Vita's painful saddle I'll be able to get faster - I want to be able to do the 'fast' bit of my all-the-way-there commute (i.e. no train) in an hour - the last bit through Cambridge there's no point timing, as it can vary up to 10 minutes from traffic lights alone! I suspect that my average speed would be quite low anyway, because of that section.

Like my route then.

There is a stretch of about 3 km, where I can really hammer it.

Quick glance at clock, pedal hard and another glance when I pass the roadsign.
Do it in both directions, mentally calc the average of the two passes and then congratulate or commiserate :eek:/:smile: .

I haven't measured the exact distance. The timing is comparative rather than absolute. It indicates rather than quantifies my sprinting.
