Yup, but putting that into practice is very great challenge. Hard drugs are not always a lifestyle choice, even for the very privileged.

I didn't pay much attention to the Geldof family for most of this century, but I read the obits and thought with that messed up childhood, it's impressive that she worked it out of her system by the age of 23. Turns out I was wrong.

Are there really people here who experienced the trauma she went through as a child, including being effectively abandoned by their mother, who thus feel entitled to judge her?

One of my close friends kept up a heroin habit for 15 years before kicking it. He also got himself to work everyday, raised a son, financially helped him through university and is now the very proud father of a doctor.

Some people are judgmental, know-all, smug, self-righteous posters and don't seem to be able to kick the habit. Being an internet guru ain't an easy addiction to beat.

I don't think you were wrong though. She had made a successful life and a happy family with her husband and children, which is actually possible while being a heroin user. I know people won't believe this, because they choose to prefer the stereotype of filthy addicts lying in the gutter, but with a reliable supply of safe drugs a normal life is possible for a drug user. The person working at the desk next to you could be a user and you would never know.

Before anyone rushes to judge this young woman, implying that she should have had more 'self-control' and just stopped using, I suggest they get over to the giving up smoking thread and read how smokers can't even bear to think of ending their habit. Ending a heroin habit is far more difficult.

How long will it take for this to get through to those that can do something about it?
