In a word no but it would be better than nothing as a temporary measure. Grease will keep the tread lubricated for a lot longer as it won't fling off after 3 mins!

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
It will do, but a small tube of Copper Grease will last for ages, and can be used wherever you need anti seize - e.g. bottle cage bolts.
edit: £2.19, lasts forever. Also use it on cleat bolts. Invaluable!

Any grease will do.
I have used cheapo halfords for many years on pedals and they have always undone easy enough.

Don't use GT or WD40 as they are water displacers.

I have a tube of copper grease in my toolbox that must be 20 years old and is still only half used. As has been stated, a smear is all that is required on the treads. For normal use I use standard lithium grease from the local agricultural merchant. Again, a tub will last years.

I would like to know what the name of the grease new bikes have on the bearings, the blue or green stuff. Undisturbed it stays good for years.

Copper grease may be the best but other than first delivery from a lbs (where its been applied), I've always use Lithium or Teflon grease and never had a problem.

I have a tin of Shell grease that is at least 30 years old, still way over half the tin left. It's great stuff.
