I did the challenge ride in 2010 and it was my longest ride ever at that time.
People were doing it on MTBs, road bikes, hybrids, recumbents, tandems - anything goes - it's all good road surfaces throughout. (Well as good as they get in Scotland! ;-))
Go for it and enjoy the day out

The chaos that others are complaining about is IMO all part of the fun. It is great seeing so many people out on bikes from the lycra clad roadies and baggy wearing mountain bikers all the way through to kids riding on tag a longs. It is an excellent first event for people do do - not just because of the numbers and variety taking part but also the route is relatively flat and there is often a tailwind too!

Sportive route is much, much quieter than the challenge ride. Have done it for the last 2 years, but on both occasions, the weather has been poor (well it is September). Quite hilly in the first 40 miles or so as well, but settles down thereafter.
Is the sportive route suitable for a Road Bike? I would be game for this instead, especially with a nice tailwind.:cuppa:

Aiden - I would say the Sportive route is only suitable for a road bike - 100 miles of road all the way. Wind was prevalent last year, coming from the South West, so the section out from Glasgow towards Kimarnock was a challenge, but from Muirkirk onwards was wind assisted.
