"Another feature unique to the wasp and hornet is that the venom contains a pheromone which alarms all other wasps in the area and invites them to join the attack on the victim. Whilst one can see the evolutionary and defensive benefits of such an alarm system, it is particularly worrying for the victim. Whilst bees therefore do fly in swarms and have the reputation for attacking in swarms, do not let the comparitively solitary journey of the wasp deceive since not only can one wasp sting more than once, but it calls all wasps nearby to come and help."

Eeeeek! Those damned eusocial vespids, eh? As it was all over in probably less that half a minute, the cyclist behind may well have got it in the neck, literally, by the time the supporting hordes arrived. I hope it wasn't someone allergic .

Just stab yourself with an epipen next time. I must admit to chuckling at the thought of some deranged cyclist stripping frantically on the seafront while beating herself.

Yes there was definitely some comedy value for the onlookers. Except for the ones I was veering towards. But I'd like it noted that I never got off the bike - ask Bonj if that makes me a serious cyclist.

Pictures needed! I require a box of wasps and a train ticket to Swansea. Oh and a camera.

I intend to take a box on the FNRttC, and unleash a swarm about my head at the Cafe stop. No doubt the usual unflattering snaps will ensue, but at least I'll have a novel excuse for failing the CycleChattersHotorNot Test.

When The Flood comes and we have to decide who goes in the Ark, I'm going to vote to leave out the wasps and the estate agents, both pests with no obvious purpose in life.

Why are you wearing a merino base layer in this weather anyway? is it some sort of arctic micro-climate in swansea?

I got stung on my chest part of me on sunday. The ****er came over, hit me and got in my jersey, then when i went to feel if it was there, i grabbed it by accident and the ****er stung me:angry::biggrin::angry::angry::angry: Stupid ****.
It either died and fell off, or flew off, but it stung me.

So i did the normal thing, sped up and kept going.
As soon as it happened, i said to the person next to me it happened, he then went off to the back:laugh:

We've been through this on another thread - it's a light one, and is the best thing imaginable in this weather. Truly serious cyclists wear them all the time. I say base layer, but if I'd had anything over it I might still be looking for the wasp.

I was stung five times by a wasp on the way home this evening...twenty minutes later, after stopping to chat to someone, I was rocketing up hills I usually dawdle up, and wondering why anyone bothers which such things as gears...

Out of curiosity, can you climb up walls with your fingertips now?

Well I dont want to jinx myself, and I am frantically touching wood with one hand and both feet as I type this (try it, its not as easy as it sounds:biggrin:) But I have NEVER been stung by anything. Ever.

Maybe they like me:thumbsup:

I've only been stung by a bee on the thumb. It was caught up in a towel which I was going to dry myself with. Could've been worse I suppose, . . . or better!:ohmy:
