Yes I saw the Biopace sticker on one of the earlier images.
Value there, with the surface rust abraded away.
I'd just bang in a Stronglight (or one of my stock of UN-52s).
That 'Golden Virginia' tobacco tin has seen a few 'goings on' (in your garage).

I seem to remember the BB in mine went south fairly quickly and Roy Pink in Newport Pagnell sorted me out with a proper cartridge BB.

Yes the 'Golden Virginia ' contains quite a few different freewheel removing tools and certainly has seen some action in various owners garages.

Must admit the crank and both mechanisms could quite easily adorn a road bike easily.

Yep as long as the shaft and cups are not pitted a couple of quid on new bearings should sort it, one tip (though you probably know it) is plenty of grease.

Cartridge ball bearings are crap however bikes under 10 years old with 'cup and cone' bottom brackets suffer with woeful case hardening that flakes and pits as they're made on the cheap.

These should clean up well enough for what I need it for .

Bottom bracket has been fully overhauled , found some loose bearings to replace the broken caged ones on the drive side .

Spindle was good so a quick clean up and all rebuilt.

Whilst the crank was off gave it a good clean.

All back together

Next job is to service the headset and drop a set of 700 wheels in to work out what drop I have and to see what calipers I have or can get to suit.

Looks like a 52 mm drop on rear and a 61 drop on front with 700s .

Your picture prompted me to read up on boron. It doesn't appear to be a suitable material for bike parts.

It's a boron Steel, much like Manganese or Chromium Steel simply an element added to the Iron in the Steel making process, there is only a very small percentage used but it aids 'hardenability' of the Steel

Another hour this morning getting the wheel bearings greased and adjusted , removal of the padlock and the miscellaneous brackets attached to the bike for various reasons then as a reward a few laps of the cul de sac to see if it feels better and it does.

Headset is next

Had a session earlier doing the headset, looks like it was much needed.

Then putting it back together the top nut broke thankfully had loads of spare 1 inch ones.

The Diamond back left the garage yesterday hopefully the new owner enjoys it.

On this morning's ride I had a rear spoke go pop on me quite a regular thing on this rear wheel for some strange reason. Once home found a new spoke of suitable length and set about fitting it, new spoke wouldn't scree in to old nipple , so stripped tyre off and found a pot of nipples and found one that would screw on to spoke and then built it all back together , ready to go.

Next in the garage is this 2012 specialized secteur sport that the previous owner claims it's only done less than 500 miles.
