18 mph average tonight on the way home, beating my previous 17.5 last year on the hybrid, ok, will admit to a favourable wind, if not exactly a strong tailwind.

I think its a combination of it being light, me having lost a few pounds and doing every day on the bike, plus now having a road bike. I wonder if loosing the other 20 or so pounds I want to lose will make enough of a difference to get to a 20 mph average, am keen to improve further and lose weight as a doing a version of the Coast to Coast with some "proper" cyclists from work (as opposed to me, a podgy communting chancer), they have extended the route a bit and I think they set quite a high standard, hence the motivation B)

Yes, I was still careful and didnt take any big risks.

no such thing as a strong tailwind is there

bravo anyway, it all counts, where is this. the red lights in London sadly make this sort of thing fairly meaningless around here

Yes, I am lucky and my semi rural commute flatters a little as there are no lights and not many junctions, downsides are crap surfaces.

Just interested to see how losing weight and getting fitter will improve my speed, its a good way to tell but it doesnt pay to get to wrapped up in it.

Yeah there is, that's when you turn 120 degrees after a descent into a climb only to look down & find you're going quicker up hill than you were down hill... or when you manage to average the thick end of 30mph for 10 miles after struggling to get into double figures when sprinting in the opposite direction.

It wasnt one of those, have had that about twice !

Tonights was a change from slogging into a headwind.
