I just don't get it, and some of them actually annoy me. The problem is that they are usually on quite expensive cars, so I may just be suffering from jealousy of the owners' wealth!

Apply £60 fine for non standard plates... each and every time.

Not sure why this thread progressed beyond this post, seems to cover it I think.

I always wondered if the sports car I used to see around Leith around 10 years ago belonged to a man or a woman:

G PU55Y

They had illegal spacing back then too!

Anyway, they apreciated (believed) that I bought an old Skoda that happened to have my name on the plate, I said nothing about it at all to change their view and I was able to contine my work with them without incidents.

Funnily enough many are bought because people don't want the age of their car known.

One of my wife's colleagues has a husband who is classic BMW man, and he buys older cars, claims they are more up to date and more expensive than they are, and uses the "prat plates" to hidethe age.

I love them..... its almost like writing out a fine for yourself

"What concerns me most Officer that this number plate looks as if it is forged as the numbers have been altered."

"More worrying than the bad driving was the fact that the plate was almost unreadable"

Works most times as the Police can then issue a rectification notice.

One local who was a pain with his parking got a fine and told to correct his plates. He now has an expensive set of plates that without the doctoring means sod all!

I also know of someone else who when caught speeding did the "Why don't you catch criminals" routine and also anded up with an additional fine and producer for his prat plate.

I don't think they exist in France! At least, difficult to see how even French ingenuity can make something of "1234XY75" or some-such.

But, no, wait! They changed the system earlier this year, the format is now "AAnnnAA". Any bets on good Gallic vulgarisms in that format!?

I believe it's illegal to put on a plate, "prat" or otherwise, that under-states the age of the car. For example you can't put "XX 09 XXX" on a pre-2009 car.

Not all are bought for £££££ as willy substitutes.

Mrs B's maternal grandfather was in the motor trade in Brum and was able to get a couple of plates in the LOV nn series circa 1951. One of them has been in the family ever since and now graces our Berlingo.

His plates mean that the age is not easily identifiable, and he then claims they are younger.... not putting 09 plates on an older car. He is posing not selling!

With the help a black screw ;) they have my real name on there for £980
In that case, good evening to you, SW08 NMR.

It's often cheaper to change your name than buy the plate, and people don't realise how vain you are.

Which is ironic coming from me, as we've had a personal plate for nearly 20 years.
