I just cased out your ride Tincaman.
Circa 7.6 miles, took me 32 minutes at a reasonable pace, 15mph average i guess on a relatively windless day.
We talked about the gap in the road shown on Google maps on Hurn Road (about a mile from Werrington). Its a pedestrian bridge over the railway. You'll have to carry the bike or there's steel gulleys on the side of the steps to wheel yer bike in. I carried mine over my shoulder.
Hurn Road is a single lane, a little muddy, but there's very very little traffic ever on there, it just feeds a few houses. Perfectly rideable on a roadbike, just watch out for the mud.
Also, on Vikes route, about a mile from the Marriot, as you enter ferry meadows country park (just over a little stone railway bridge) you have about 100 mtrs of hardcore track to negotiate on the left. Its possibly a little messy if its wet, but again, perfectly rideable.
It was nice to do a different route for me..
