Anyway, my minipump only pumped the tyre up to about 50 PSI which is half of what it should be. Can any recommend a pump with a bit more oomph?

And, more importantly, can anyone recommend hand cleaner that you can carry with you? I had forgotten how dirty changing a tube was.

Wat you really need is something like a mini track pump so that you are pushing down against the ground, rather than trying to hold the pump against the rim as you are pumping. Otherwise you just can't get much over 50 psi, something like the Topeak Morph Turbo Mini Pump or similar...

Thanks, both of you.

I am a fan of track pumps. I have one at home. The pump in my pannier is a Truflo Maxair. It works, and it got me home, but the back wheel felt like blancmange.

I have a saddlebag permanently attached to each bike (my commute bike lives in a lock-up at work, my other one never gets left anywhere public) which has 2 spare tubes, tyre levers, puncture repair kit, multi-tool. I always carry a bit of cash and mobile phone, and both bikes have mini-pumps attached.

I was thinking of taking the other bike (it doesn't weigh as much) to work tommorow on a testrun to see if I could emulate Tynan's glory run.So I was thinking of taking the bare minimum to shave 5 minutes off of my commute.Dare I risk it.Wont seem the same having two tyres on that can p*nct*re.
