Last June I took out a new contract with Vodafone, while still had 6 months left to run on my old one - I broke my old phone & for some reason I didn't have insurance on it - Claiming through home insurance wasn't worth the hassle! So they agreed to drop my old contract down to £5 a month, give me a new contract & phone, all calss from old number would be diverted to new number and my old contract would be cancelled when it expired in Jan. This also gave me enough time to notify everyone of my change of number - My son attends 4 hospitals & over a dozen Drs, contacting them all & making sure they all have new details is a nightmare!

About a month after getting the new phone I started having techinical problems with it & made several visits to local store each time they fixed it, but the problem kept reacurring within a few weeks.
In May, a day after again visiting local store I recived a phone call from 'Vodafone', offering me a loyalty bonus upgrade on my phone, all I had to do was extend my contract for another 24months, as I was sick to the back teeth of my HTC phone I agreed & got a spiffy new Samsung.
Today I get home to letter from a compnay called Fonehouse, aplogising for the delay in contacting me, thnaking me for my upgrade through them & a new 24 months contract to be signed...For my old number that expired in Jan!
I immediatly called them & explained that I had no idea that I had upgraded through them, that I had thought the original call was from Vodafone & that when asked to confirm my details I had given the number i currently use not the one they had upgraded me on & that i was not going to sign any contract with them.
They were a bit snotty with me, told me they never calimed to be Vodafone & that they always said they were acting on behalf of Vodafone, fair enough i replied I may have misheard your rehearsed script, or maybe your script is written in a such a way that the person you are talking to hears Vodafone & that is what the brain focus's on & processes.
Again i was told that they had not acted fraudulently, again i told them i would not sign a contract on a number that i had not used in over 8 months & that I had when asked for my details given a different number.
I asked if they recorded calls, and was told yes - I suggested they go locate my original conversation, check what had been said then call me back!
They did about 30 mins later & she apologised, agreeing that I had given my current Vodafone number not the old one, and that they would galdly cancel my contract...all I had to do was send the phone back to them. I asked them to send me a prepaid recorded delivery envelope to do so - I'm not paying out to return something that I now know i would never have taken if i'd realised what it was they were offering. Again after a bit of umming & ahhhing she agreed to this.

I then realised i'd be phonless once i return it. I had given my HTC to a friend after her sons PAYG got stolen.
Looked online at how much it would cost to buy a new phone - Bloody Hell!!!!
So I called Vodafone & explained all of this to them, thinking that maybe they could let me have a phone & raise my monthly bill to cover the cost or something similar...What fabulous Customer Services - They are sending me a new phone, the updated version of the Samsung I have to return.....all for free!
It should be here by noon tommorrow!

But I still feel rather cross, that this Third Party compnay misled me into signing a contract so easily, I'm not a stupid person, I didn't think I am someone who is easily conned or duped, but by chsoing what words to use & how to use them they led me to believe they were calling from Vodafone.... How many other folks have they done this too, who may now not be able to talk confidently back at them & insist on being recused from their contracts?

I watched Watchdog a while back and they mentioned this scam, I think they stated it was illegal either fraud or deception, maybe worth checking their website.

Had similar happen to my wife,

they actually edited the original call before sending it to trading standards, the whole thing was dragged out for quite some time despite canceling under distance selling regs and having never received the phones (left them sat at the post office uncollected  )

A bit late for the OP but you can tell when you're not talking to the holder of your mobile contract. They usually start asking me which phone I have now, and then ask for my address details "to send the new phone to". I insist on getting a clear answer to "are you from Vodafone" which can take some time! Then I start getting a bit suspicious and ask them why they need to know the address information, after all, they've got all the details of my current contract in front of them haven't they? I mean, they've just said they're from Vodafone, haven't they?

Not if they're trying it on they haven't ...

Usually they get a bit annoyed at my refusal to tell them "things they already know" so they just keep repeating their need for information.

Just put the phone down... oh, and never give out your contact details to someone who has initiated the phone call. You have NO idea who they are.

Unrelated but another mobile scam, I had a text today which just said "This is new number".

Now, there is a chance that I know someone who would send that without saying whose new number it was, and I certainly know people who would consider that to be acceptable English for a text mesage, but I'm going to put it down as a scam anyway, with the scammer expecting me to text back saying "Who are you" or something similar.

There's been no real harm done, i've had the phone since May, but due to their own admin error they've only just sent me the contract, obvioulsy until that is signed they can't bill me.
As i've been using the sim card for my new number in it, i've been paying Vodafone my usual monthly bill.
So they can't even claim the last 2 months either, basicaly i've had a nice shiny new phone for 2months & it's not cost me an extra penny LOL!

I posted on here hoping that it might make others aware & avaoid someone falling for the scam & do get ripped off

The company involved isn't by any chance based in a triangle based around Blackpool, Chester & Manchester is it?

Had enough of these calls myself. But for me my best bit was having found out who one lot were, doing a little research & being able to tell them that it wouldn't be worth my while going through them as they were in liquidation. I was even able to give the date they were to cease trading, as given by the liquidator.

I know its not nice for the person on the other end, finding out from the person they're calling, but I never asked to be called in the first place.

They've not been able to set up a DirectDebit as they've only just sent me the paperwork to sign, and as i've been using my old Vodafone sim/number, they can't charge me as i've never used the number on the contract..
PLUS - My credit rating is shoot anyway

Just to clarify you broke your handset but instead of buying a cheap one (£20) from ebay to use for 6 months, you got a brand new contract?

Yep!
I was paying £20 a month on my contract at that point & had a Nokia phone.
Vodafone dropped the charge on that contract to £5 a month, set me a new contract at £18 a month & I got an 'smartphone' and as I was technically a new contract/customer I got a better deal on minutes, texts & unlimited broadband than on my previous old contract.
So for 6 months I paid £3 a month more & got a brand new Android phone. Why would I want to buy a basic phone with no apps/gadgets for £20 when for another £3 I got all that...?

we never actually received the phone (never collected from post office so post office would have returned it), never signed the contract, wrote a letter of cancelation.

A direct debit wasn't set up, but the account was.

I recon my 'phone arrangement beats most. Sim only, fixed price (ex VAT) for as long as I keep the contract running, or until I'm given 4 weeks notice of scheme termination.

I buy my own phones. The last one was £3.99 at Argos. The trick is to buy one sold for pay as you go on the same system, put the SIM in it, and just credit the top up voucher bought with it to the account (unfortunately it was the last one so I couldn't get a spare for when I drop it in a deep puddle).

I pay less for my 300/300 with a months roll than any so called deal I've seen offered during the last 7 years, but there are still contracts of this sort around. I just can't understand why more people don't use them.
