@ColinJ - yes, it's an extended back part. The result is more like the phones of old. I can't see the one I bought on eBay but this 8000ma one is similar.
Bear in mind there will be some losses/inefficiencies when charging a battery, these are generally through heating of the batteries used, losses in the cables and losses to the regulation and display circuits, plus mobile phone operations will draw on the supply current while charging.
You can keep in pocket, depends what you are using phone for, navigation on handlebars or just to measure ride or even as a phone where it can be in bag or pocket
If on handlebars, you could have the pack in a tri bag on your crossbar and then run the USB from the pack to your phone on its mount. Probably not advisable on wet days (you may need to cut a hole in the mount to feed the cable in to). Or you could get a bag similar to this, phone goes in the window bit, battery pack underneath. Again not a great solution in heavy rain, but then none are really. Might also not work for a phablet sized phone
I think you made the right call. I wouldn't want to trust my phone staying in either of those over a pothole, and if you are planning a long ride in the UK, you also want your phone protected (assuming it's not IP67) for when it inevitably rains.
