My sister got a new phone recently and gave me her old one, but when I swapped the sim card in to it it just felt so fragile in my hand, I daren't use it. My old Nokia seems to cope with being in my pocket all the time - it's a bit battered, but it does what I need, and the buttons are nice and positive - this new one seems a bit wishy washy. I suppose I'd get used to it, but for now, I'm sticking with the old one.

USB has been around for years as the standard high speed powered serial connection

at the moment it's not yet on all phones, but it will be

The idea being that you won't need multiple chargers, you can charge from your PC USB port, and they wont ship chargers with the phones after a while.

D'oh well I sort of misread but I said this earlier in the thread as did Uncle Mort. USB is on a lot fewer phones than people think. I had to shop around a bit for one that did and pay quite a large premium to get one. All very sensible stuff, as quite a few phones don't ship data cables anyway.

My X1 had the usb socket, it charged great through the PC - but just would not charge very well through the car charger though - I tried a couple of different leads but no good. Maybe it was just that phone.

Funnily enough someone I know has just got rid of their X1... and awaiting delivery of shiny new thing for broadly similar reasons.

Fully agree with this. My perfect phone:

Shockproof. Waterproof. Non-slip exterior. Non-scratch screen. Easy keyboard lock. Battery life 1 week. Makes phone calls. Texts and BB messenger or equivalent. Address book. Possible to enlarge the display for easy reading. Small range of simple ringtones with volume control. Cost £20.

It should be possible.

Since I hate the damn things and only carry a phone on forum rides, I'd settle for one which:

1. Has a display that I can read in sunlight. People late for rides (or not turning up) text me and I can't read what they've written.
2. Doesn't lack the obvious feature of being able to take the number that a text message was sent from and copy it to the 'phonebook'. I can electronically copy numbers from voice calls, but I have to write numbers from text messages on paper, and then go to a different page to enter them into my phonebook manually - aaaaaaaargh!

i have a pay as you go phone and get free texts for a month if i top up £10 per month. my £10 tends to last about 2-3 months before it runs out, so i may spend £50-60 per year maximum.

why would i want to get a new phone that would probably cost me £30 per month for stuff i don't need?

I used to always have a basic phone, chosen for a small size rather than features. Didnt need a camera, didnt need fancy ringtones, didnt need a big screen, didnt need games etc. However last year my ipod got stolen so i made an impulse buy of an iphone as its replacement and its one of the best purchases i've made. Not for the phone features (just does what my old phone done!) but for having easy internet access and all the stuff that comes from that, its very convienient and is pretty easy to use too.

I love my phone. Am never without it or I feel lost Its the new Sony Ericsson one, the W995 and its the best phone Iv had so far (and saddo here has had loads)

I've stopped taking mine on rides, everyone else has one. Five telephones riding along the road, how contactable do you need to be!

We've got a couple of 3310s lying unloved in the kitchen drawer. A few years ago I got my wife one of these and it's a fantastic phone, she loves it.

It's a Sony Ericsson W810i. The case is 100% plastic, which is a great material to make phones out of, and seems to take any abuse you can throw at it. Camera takes really good pictures, even in low light, has a flash and lots of other 'proper camera' functions. It has other cool practical features to, like being able to use the flash as a torch, plus a really good Walkman. It's just a solid, no frills, little phone with the kind of features you'll actually use. Highly recommended.

My first two phones were hand me down rejects. When they packed up I got a new one as they are now quite cheap. It does all sorts of things that I would never use 99% of the time (actually I dont even use the phone 99% of the time). I just got the thinnest one in the shop so it fitted in my pocket ok.

But I can just ignore the games, radio, mp3, camera and probably lots more things it does. Things like a camera are OK to have for the one day a year you may need it (say to take a photo when some tosser drives into your car or something).

I had that very phone for about 3 years and LOVED IT!!! Had other-supposedly better- ones but always went back to my W810 after a few days.Id recommend it highly to anyone too, the only phone iv liked as much or better is the one iv got now which is the latest version of this phone anyway.

My son and I were at an ACDC concert a while back and at one point we both took our phones out and were taking pictures. The woman next to us saw us do this and took out her Apple iPhone. I saw her look at it blankly for a minute than put it away again, she obviously wanted to use the camera but didn't know how! ;0)
