Jacques Anquetil was perfection on a bicycle. He was also unique, try to emulate his style and you would come a cropper. He rode with his saddle very high to suit his peddling style which involved pulling up on the pedals as well as pushing down. His 'bars were also very far forward, which allowed his very powerful back muscles to come into play.
All this combined with the biggest heart ever discovered by French doctors resulted in the ultimate athlete gifted with both endurance and stamina.
He was described as "The rider who could drop nobody, but nobody could drop."
He was also rated by his fellow pros as the one who tried hardest.
I have pictures of him on my office wall. RIP.
