It's amazing to think that they could build decent racing bikes back in those days, I have an idea of bikes in the 1960's as being made of lead piping and old shoes and all held together with sellotape and brown string.

And the motorbikes from back then are scary looking things! That chap on the motorbike up above ... a 1300 Fireblade it ain't!

Leave it out, perleeese!!

Er, Campagnolo was producing Record chainsets, derailleurs, hubs in the late '50s.

Reynolds 531 and similar tubing was all the rage.

Dinosaurs were not roaming the Earth and elastic-trickery had been piped into all homes.

It must be '65, he rode for St Raphael up to '64.

He was deffo the most stylish rider who ever rode a bike.

You could be right, Saddle Bum. I don't think I went that year, we used to go every year from me being about 14 for years.

When I was around 16 I had this thing about Anquetil, and even drew a pen and ink drawing of him. I wish I could find it now!

Great pic. Interesting for me as I've just started reading Sex Lies And Handlebar Tape.
He always seemed to look "just right" on the bike didn't he?

Raindog, He always looked just right off the bike too!

You're welcome Flying Monkey, I've got lots of B&W photographs from my parents house but don't recall many other real top liners, only local/national TT winners who were racing up here.

Jacques Anquetil was perfection on a bicycle. He was also unique, try to emulate his style and you would come a cropper. He rode with his saddle very high to suit his peddling style which involved pulling up on the pedals as well as pushing down. His 'bars were also very far forward, which allowed his very powerful back muscles to come into play.

All this combined with the biggest heart ever discovered by French doctors resulted in the ultimate athlete gifted with both endurance and stamina.

He was described as "The rider who could drop nobody, but nobody could drop."

He was also rated by his fellow pros as the one who tried hardest.

I have pictures of him on my office wall. RIP.
