I think long exposure time is a big part of it - most earlier photos are of people looking solemn, just because it's difficult, if not impossible, to hold a smile for that length of time.

Thoroughly enjoyed those...and one thing occured to me while looking.
I sat there thinking, some have a distinctly oriental look, Japanese, something i'd never noticed before, there must be some ancient connection ?
5 seconds on google...yup, it's believed that american indians are descendants of pacific peoples, japanese included, from long ago.

I enjoy looking at photos of the poor of the past, there is a site that does mug shots, here's a link... what I find fascinating is how small the people were...

Its supposed to be a single road leading towards some structure
