The etymology of the 'Black Country' moniker is not exactly a settled matter.
Yeah it is and has been for a long time - It's because of the smoke generated by the 100's of small coal fired smelters and iron workers which turned the whole area black. Although some posh git in a carriage is the pretend version for those that think that only posh people are allowed to name things.
