Been given reports that Planet X showroom in Edinburgh is now closed for good, a wee bit of a pity as it was handy to go and try before you buy and also saved waiting on delivery etc. Quite a lot of competition in Edinburgh for bike related stuff and the original Edinburgh CO-OP ( Edinburgh bicycle ) is probably the stalwart in the town.

For some reason curious, so I went to the Planet X site. http://www.planetx.co.uk/stores

We have three specialist stores for you to visit.
But then they only list 2.

As I said cheap does not always guarantee success, the COOP been there for donkeys years at the other end of the meadows from Planet X and stil does very well and bought up other shops in the town. Pity as it was handy sometimes for popping in.

Didn't they take over an existing bike shop there?

If so it likely mean they got a short lease very very cheap

Spoke to a family member of a family owned LBS and the person said that it is now tough because of the increasing rentals along high streets.
So it not competing with other LBSs as there is sufficient demand with the growing interest in cycles but they cannot compete with the other trades when it comes to rentals.

This is a shame. I hadn't been inside since not long after it opened and it was a bit light of stock back then.
I was surprised that they took on this location to be honest. I'd have thought a chain its size would have fared better in a larger venue on the outskirts of town, one of the retail parks perhaps, with more square footage/stock displaying capacity and cheaper rent/rates.
Still sorry to read that it's gone. I bought my road bike there when it was the Tri Centre. I hope the staff affected find work soon.
