Plant identification required...

I've also posted in the Gardening section but it may gather tumbleweed there... geddit?
Mrs rp thinks this is a plant of worth while I thought it might be a weed!
Any ideas?

I believe I recognise it as a cultivated plant, but couldn't tell you what. It looks as if that purple has been deliberately bred in, rather than being a spontaneous variation.

(The forum's botanists are now going to list all of the weeds with purple leaves and stems)

Its a semi-wild type of thistle. But a weed is only a flower in the wrong place. x
