It's not impartial at all. It also makes a number of claims that simply aren't supported by any evidence or which are simply not true.

It doesn't offend me. I was just pointing out that your so called impartial and fact based article is anything but...

Which parts are untrue and can you link me in the direction of articles that show this? I am genuinely interested to read up on this and you seen quite knowledgeable on the subject.

Yes
Does anyone, like myself, use them as bin liners? I normally use my Minions and Trasnformers Tesco bags for life but there are times I don't on purpose as I need some plastic bags for the bin. I don't mind paying 5p for the privilege in future but i wonder if using the bag twice (shopping and for the bin) if better than buying actual bin bags which use more material?
Yes all our bags go into a huge sock tube bag that hangs on the back of the utility room door. We use them for the loo bins and also, sometimes for the kitchen, although that means pretty constant refills as they aren't really that big.

Interested to see how this works at the self checkout aisle. Will there be no bags and a button to request a bag runner to visit and deliver each bag as I fill them up.

How will the charge work on an practical level, will the cost of said bag runner be passed onto.me after the 5p is sent to the government

My own experiences of work trips to China and Hong Kong... I was genuinely shocked at the amount of plastic floating around in harbours, rivers etc, and the complete lack of a sh!t given by anyone
Others here have more experience of these parts than I do, but it was an eye opener for me.

M&S have done this for ages, relies on honesty. Maybe that will work less well in Tesco!

Geniuses were at work in the Tesco's Metro this lunchtime. One guy just picked up his stuff and walked to the manned till leaving the self-service out of action while another bloke started shouting for help because the machine wouldn't take his money.

The problem?

Neither of them read or understood the instruction to press 0 if you were not using a bag

There's not enough references and there's a high degree of confirmation bias in the sources selected. It's a poorly written blog posting masquerading as an objective critique.

I've yet to come across anything written on the subject that is not selective in its sources, this seem better than most.

Both my wife and my daughter work at local supermarkets. Mrs Accy hasn't come home yet with tales of irate customers but my daughter has. She's been getting abuse while on checkouts today. One middle aged bloke called her a sad bitch:dry: for not letting him have three bags for 5p and a middle aged woman said she wasn't paying 5p for a bag so she carried about 15 items in her hands to her car, with stuff falling all over the place! I'm looking forward to hearing more tales at 6 o clock.:okay:

I'm not sure it will translate. The M&S move was driven by a "choice" to curtail bag use, which promoted its philosophy and marketing shift. Today's initiative is a statutory thing, so trusting the public not to put the store at risk of contravention of statutory compliance, seems a risky strategy.

I see this as a nightmare for the stores having to employ dedicated bag compliance officers Or maybe even stock auditors to ensure the store is complying with the law.

I totally agree with the charge, mor at least I agree with the reduction in the use of bags, so the charge seems a good attempt to change the social value of bag use etc....remains to be seen if it is actually better for the environment or not. What is better is that this issue has gained social acceptance.
our sainsburys seems to be done on a trust basis, it asks you how many you are going to use and presumably adds 5p for each one. the bags are there for you to help yourself - nobody seems to take them. I asked a friend who works on the checkout what difference the charge had made to handing out plastic bags (I'm in scotland and this started a year ago here) she said it had went from 2 or 3 bags for every customer to 2 or 3 for the whole shift - we have seemed to have just stopped using them up here, which is excellent.
Perhaps this is the aim, rather than actually complying with a charge, to just make it socially unacceptable to use the things.

I hope it works, it can only be a good thing

As much as I go there rarely, lidl have always charged for their bags and I've never seen abusive customers...and some of their customers don't look the most salubrious of individuals, I doubt they have been conditioned by M&S policy
