Following my mate this morning travelling at a fair speed around a fairly tight left hand bend, A plastic bag blew across his path and the next thing he knew it's took his front wheel from under him and he is lying in the gutter on the opposite side of the road, luckily there were no cars coming the opposite way and apart from a few scrapes and bruises he was unhurt. Anyone else had any litter related crashes?

It's a real bummer when they get caught up in your gears dude.

I once ran over a piece of bent wire (possibly a motorbike spoke) in the road, without seeing it (it was dull grey, as was the tarmac), and it got caught by my rear tyre and ran up under the mudguard and jammed, locking the back wheel and bringing me to an abrupt (but thankfully, upright) stop. I'm so glad it didn't get picked up by the front wheel instead.

That's why it is vital that the front mudguards are attached by something like Secu-clips - they should pull free if something gets trapped behind the mudguard.

I always try to give plastic bags a miss, I once had one wrap around the rear sprockets and it took me ages to get everything free again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't underestimate a plastic bag or pigeon.

I did the old noob mistake of going through a puddle only to discover it was a rather nasty and deep pothole ... face plant was the order of the day.

Needless to say i stay well away from puddles now.

Traveling at 30mph along Camberwell Road a couple of years ago I caught up with a bus and as it pulled into a stop I started to overtake when it spat out a carrier bag from the back. I went left and then right trying to avoid it but the bag was in the bus's draft and seemed to be homing in on me. Caught it around the cassette, chain and mech. The bag turned into a small disk of solid plastic welding pretty much everything together. The back wheel stopped instantly, the hub twisted round on the spokes, the skewer snapped, the mech was ripped off the frame unfortunately not at the replaceable hanger - not that that mattered much as the mech followed the chain round and took out the seat stay. I stayed upright and swore. I'd finished paying for the bike that week. On the long walk home I broke my toe.

I got a piece of wire caught in the front wheel. Straight over the bars.
