Chill, avoid confrontation. The mercury is rising which seems to make people more combative .

Definitely.

OK! I would still apply the sentiment from my earlier post though. I'd much rather they were on bikes than in the car/bus/train. They're irritating, sure, but a bonus to the rest of us cyclists.

+1, annoying as it is, they do at least present a "volume" of riders that allow drivers to get used to us more.

I guess the downside is the impression these few leave on the masses of car drivers in such a short amount of time.(the few sunny weeks we have)

Still...I'd rather have them then not.

Yesterday while out for an afternoon ride I found myself face to face with a bint on an MTB riding on the wrong side of the road in busy traffic, I taught her some colourful language, dozy cow.

Any insight into the mindset of such people?

I knew I made a fair few blunders when I first started riding in a couple of years ago, but then I've never learned to drive so didn't really know the rules of the road. Only times I RLJ'd was over ped crossings with no peds.

But I know quite a few people with clean driving licenses and reasonable road behaviour who put them on a bike and they'll amble over pavements, through red lights, putting themselves and others in danger whilst completely oblivious to the world around them, and think it's no big deal. I ride home occasionally with a friend who rarely if ever looks behind. I had to have a word after squirming when he suddenly pulled out around a parked car without looking as a big 4x4 came up behind and had to brake to avoid hitting him. He didn't even realise this had happened, and just smiled and said I worry too much.

You're either a real short arse or riding a recumberant

Actually, he rides a road bike with the saddle right up and the bars right down. That's why his shoulders are level with other rider's panniers and he cant straighten up when he get off the bike. Hence 'bent' Mikey.

As I always say, those of us who are aware must watch out for those who aren't. It's just good to have so many cyclists on the road.

My bike had its first drizzly outing today! I was glad of the rain, I had just been cycling into a wind tunnel for half an hour (maybe a slight exaggeration, but it was my first riding-into-a-headwind experience).

My experience of this type of cyclist today. I was riding behind someone travelling at my speed, so no need to overtake, especially as I knew later on he would carry straight on and I would turn.

Anyway, up ahead was a shiny, generic MTB with the pilot "sleep cycling", totally oblivious to his surrounding. We hauled him in and started to overtake, he jerked awake with the bike wobbling violently. He looked at the guy in front of me in amazement, then turned and looked at me.

Next minute he is standing on the peddles, leaning right over his bars and pumping as if his life depended on it. He re-undertook us and continued to look anxiously over his shoulder as he sped away.

I laughed so much I had to slow down.
