Taking my HNC in marine engineering, I realised that we went into one topic in such detail only about five people in the entire country would ever need to do those calculations.
Yup that happens
When I was on the dole (or whatever it was called) I found that I could go on a Python Programming course for free
It was in Swansea but that was fine as I could afford a cheap hotel and I would get travel expenses and stuff
and it was a good course for the jobs I was apllying for
Anyway - course started off fine - good course and nice people
mostly - probably over half - from the central government weather place for Wales
after the basics were done they started to get us to practice by doing tasks
and after a while it became clear that all the tasks were starting to head towards Weather forecasting tasks
and how to interface with specialised Weather Forecasting devices and process the specific data they produced
Turned out that the course was being paid for by the weather place - but they had to have some "community" parts to get more funding from the government
last 2 days of the course were pretty useless from my point of view because they were SO specific to weather forecasting
it was enjoyable - but doing more generalised tasks would have been a lot more use!
and those of us that were doing it because we unemployed at the time - were that tick in the box!!!
