But, like the "VW camper" above can they be driven on the road or do people just do them to take to crazy conversion rallies?

I mean it looks cool but I'd worry what would happen if it was driven over 20mph

Most are road legal, the exceptions being some of the American ones which although legal over the pond wouldn't be in the UK...........No Mudguards/Wings (Fenders to that lot) on their 'Hot Rods'

How legal are these wacky constructions. Surely you can't take them on the road?

A lot of the ones posted here have been ones from the US, where the laws are rather different regarding what can be driven on the road.

Some of the others are just bodywork changes to standard vehicles, and probably still perfectly roadworthy (such as the VW campervan). They will need specialist insurance with those changes.

In the UK, you will also need to tell the DVLA, with most of those falling under one of three categories
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/structurally-modified-vehicles
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/kitconverted-vehicles
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/kitbuilt-vehicles

There is a reasonably good chance that most of the ones that have been shown here are actually road legal, though I am sure some of them will never actually be driven on the roads, and are just trailered to rallies and similar.
