Mere in English refers to a lake that is broad in relation to its depth, e.g. Martin Mere. A significant effect of its shallow depth is that for all or most of the time, it has no thermocline.

Yup - it's a question along the same lines as the lake district one.
Google says Lake of Menteith is the only natural body of water in Scotland called a Lake.

Named by accident apparently. This is the story I heard - A Dutch map maker was tasked with mapping the area. He supposedly asked a local what 'that' was asking about the loch, the local thought he meant the general area, which was called Laich of Menteith which the map reader misheard as Lake of Menteith. The mistake made it onto the map and stuck.

Laich meant low place in low land Scots.

Windermere is a lake, although ironically it's not a mere. Loch Lomond is a lake too.

But I can't stomach "Lake Windermere", which I think was the answer given by the contestants. "Mount Snowdon" is just as bad.
