"Officers should wear uniforms on their way to and from work to increase police visibility and help reassure the public, a think tank has suggested.

The right-leaning Policy Exchange said in London that would equate to having an extra 1,200 officers on the streets."

Police should commute in Uniform

Wonder how I'd cope with my 30 mile round trip, bike ride in ...Maybe they would issue me with "Team POLICE" Lycra

Perhaps they should spend less on wanky think tanks & use the money to put more officers on the street

I would think that if officers commuted in uniform, they would have certain rules to comply with (I'm thinking smoking in uniform as an example, assuming it's a no-no!)

It sounds like unpaid overtime to me!

its unworkable isn't it. not all police go straight to work from home. if you are on lates , you may well have gone out with your family shopping or into town. you are not going to be able to do that in uniform.

would all police want the locality to know they were in the police. I think not. in london it would be an invitation to lob a brick through a window.

Suggestions like this really do make me despair.

It reminds me of when all the great economic minds got together to solve the UK'a financial crisis and came up with the idea of .................. printing more money !!!!

No wonder people are cynical and fed up!!!

Check out the FNRttC Martlets thread in Informal Rides! It would appear that cops are never off duty!

A policeman living in a dodgy area may not wish every scroat in the street to know what he is. Especially as they work nights when their families could be subject to abuse.

exactly. However much of a shame it is that people might feel this way, we're all entitled to a bit of privacy. I don't see why people in my street need to know what I do for a living, and I don't see why a police officer should declare what he or she does for a living.

agreed.

also, if on duty when commuting, does that require all police to carry company insurance for their own cars? after all, they are expected to be at work when travelling ... ie private vehicle for company use ... should it therfore be liveried as such ... including blue lights?

would you have to cycle into work in your gear? then change into another clean uniform when you got there?

CS spray is a licensed firearm ... its not meant to be carried in private vehicles, and would that require every cop to have their own gun cabinet at the house which would require yearly visits and checks?

its bad enough carrying your stuff to cycle commute to work with, but imagine carrying about 1.5 stone of body armour, belts, cuffs, spray, tickets, notebook, radio . . . . . .

the list goes on and on of why its not a good idea.

Here for rides.
"Policy Exchange is an independent, non-partisan educational charity. We work with academics and policy makers from across the political spectrum. We are particularly interested in free market and localist solutions to public policy questions."

yet another example of agenda driven academics coming up with the unimplementable and vested interests expecting others to do things they would never do themselves.

Not much evidence of any think in that tank. Though what they've come up with does rhyme.

You know when you are just driving along minding your own business and a police car looms into sight you immediately check your speedometer and even if it shows that you are only doing 27mph small beads of sweat gather on your upper lip? Imagine a bus full of paranoid people when a 'boy in blue' gets on and everyone standing to offer their seat. I was in a pub when a local policeman came in for a pint on his way home it was like that scene in star wars or Moses parting the red sea and the silence was deafening, I think an idea like this could ruin a coppers social life.
