I don't know how big your "hole" is () but EPDM rubber liner is available for about £1.50 per sq/m. It's very durable, flexible and can stretch and shrink (with ambient temps), I'd go for that over more vulnerable pvc. Things will always happen...........

Rubber liners age just as much as PVC liners.
If you're careful with getting the liner into place, no sharp objects, then the PVC liner should suffice for your needs.
Rubber liners can "self seal" for small leaks.
£1.50 m² sounds good!
My local watergarden is charging £10 m² for Firestone EPDM ~ 22' square = £450
pnd superstore on web (inc postage) £6.20 for Firestone EDPM ~ £278

any links for your price? (i'm not finding pvc as cheap as that)
Sorry, it 's per 2 sq/ft not m, I am used to selling EPDM for roofs and worked in sq/m.

Try Ebay and elsewhere, send quote requests for the actual size not the sq/m, all these stockists should be cutting sizes out of large sheets, leaving stock pieces that they want to shift.

I believe the issue with PVC is the UV degradation. I was advised a double layer of PVC would be good solution. £140 is still a lot better than £400.

Two things bother me:
one - how will you hide the liner above the water level?
two - why is the hole not rounded and lined with sand?

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

You don't need sand as long as you have done as reiver has and lined it with fabric. As long as you hide all of the liner it doesn't matter if you have a butyl liner or PVC. It should be fine.

There is a system that is made of plastic, a bit like the plastic milk crates you used to get, and clip together to make a barrier. Its black and sits just underneath the water. It prevents herons or anything else from getting to your fish, but it is expensive.
