I was chasing someone fast down the Mile End Road today, really not enjoyed the plume of water he was throwing out

Home now, it was alright. The thought of it was considerably worse than the actuality, as usual.

I'm glad it wasn't as bad as you'd anticipated. Might be worth getting some mudguards before winter though.

This! My mate's girlfriend has a half assed mudguard that barely keeps most of the crud off her own pannier rack. It sticks out about a centimetre past the rack. I hate riding behind her in the wet. I've tried politely explaining the situation but she takes offence at the suggestion those mudguards she paid good money for aren't quite up to the job and are decidably unsociable.

I don't see the point in mudguards myself. They rarely work.

I used to think that. I didn't mind getting a bit of mud on my clothes.

Then I went for a ride along the towpaths by the trent river, gritty dirty surfaces, and it was raining. By the time we reached our destination myself and my bike were absolutely covered in muck. My friend, on her cyclocross bike with full mudguards was pretty much completely unscathed.

I bought a set the following weekend.

Decent, well fitting and appropriately coloured mudguards don't look uncool.

I've even seen brakeless hipstermobiles with a set of mountain bike crud catchers stuck on them that actually look quite sharp.
