I don't see the point in mudguards myself. They rarely work.

I dont have mudguards n my race bike and i never get spray. Even though I am using cyclo-cross tyres which have a tendancy to throw up spray.
I'm glad it wasn't as bad as you'd anticipated. Might be worth getting some mudguards before winter though.
A properly fitted pair of mudguards work wonders.
I bought a set the following weekend.
