Pop songs of the decade

One aspect of the decade of popular must have been the mushrooming of tunes in the style of gangsta - a whole separate debate looms on the 'influence' of said music, with its sleazy, posy 'attitude' stance. Plenty of big hits abound.
'Mainstream' might be something like 50 Cent with the memorable In Da Club from early in the decade. A long way removed from the shock of the Who, breaking guitars in the Railway Hotel in Wealdstone in the late 60s...

I'll have you know that I am now listening to Dizzee Rascal... anyway, come on people, let's get with the programme...

Strange, after posting recently that I thought any rap and hip hop since the 90's onwards was a load of tosh I recently heard Dizzee Rascals - Dirtee Cash. I have to say the song has rather grown on me and the lyrics are very pertinent to the current economic climate.

But pure pop? I think Madonnas Ray of Light would take some beating. (assuming it was in the last decade but I cant be bothered to check)
That was the first on my list, until I realised it was from 1998.

My favourite of the decade, and by quite a way, couldn't really be described as being 'of the decade' although it has a certain 21st century knowingness about it

Time the Revelator by Gillian Welch

This, on the other hand, is definitely out of the noughties - and very fine it is too

In a general way pop music in the noughties seems no more exciting than it was in the eighties. There's a fair amount of accomplishment and the big acts put on a tremendous show, but none of it's going to change your life.

I'm embarrassed to admit that the annoyingly catchy Great DJ by the Ting Tings gets me humming/tapping along.

Another vote for Kylie's "Can't Get You Out of My Bed" (I think that's the song...).

Even this one by Mr Timberlake gets me singing... I know, I need professional help...

Also have to say that I love The Voice Within by a certain Ms Aguilera (although the video is pants... almost literally).

I'll stop now.

There has been loads of good 'pop' music recently. Lilly Allen, Little Boots, Ting Ting's and Florence & The Machine are all on my iPod. However, I never turn off Britney Spears (Oops I Did it Again) or Kylie (Can't Get You Out of My Head) when they come on MTV!!
