Had a flat tonight (my first one) - tried changing the tube but the tyre wouldn't go on properly near the valve. Anyway, being stupid I thought it would all pop together like a car tyre if I pumped it up, so I did and my spare went pop.

My second spare was at home having lent it to a mate so I walked home. Thankfully was only a mile away.

Any ideas why it wouldn't sit properly near the valve? A mate said the rim tape might have moved?

Just thinking about going to bike shop and getting them to show me how to do it properly...

you have to make sure the tube is seated right ,before you inflate make sure the tube isnt pinched between tyre and rim and check the valve moves freely inside the tyres cavity(press the valve down towards the rim(as if u are pushing it back through the hole) and make sure its not trapped under the tyres edge

Pumping to seat the tyre only works when the problem is a flat spot cause by the bead being stuck down in the bottom of the rim well.
If there's a problem at the valve, it's generally because a bit of tube has got underneath the tyre bead. In this case, extra pumping will just lift the tyre off the rim and allow the tube to go bang.
The general technique is to push the valve so the base is clear of the rim just as you nudge the last bit of the tyre bead over the rim.
