Conventional wisdom focuses on weight. I prefer comfort. Of mind & body.
I don't necessarily recommend going to picture #3 (unless you're on a horse!) .................... but picture #4 was taken on the way to number #3 so swings and roundabouts.

This section was not very long. Due to the rough surface of the hewn passage, it was better to walk for us with paniers, but there was an unladen mountain cyclist who passed us quite happily, standing on his pedals ...

I badly miscalculated this climb in Maryland USA up to the MD Line. It was warm and sunny at the bottom of the climb. I was so cold in this pic that i was losing the will to carry on. Lesson learned! Check the weather forecast!

I saw a black Thorn with a full set of black/red Ortlieb bags (the rider had an orange quilted jacket) today on the platform at Birmingham New Street as I was sitting on the train awaiting to depart; alas, I didn't get a picture but I did think of this thread.
