ok, interesting idea and topic, as most people are prob escaping the UK for different shores. Here is my contribution from Helsinki at the weekend.

and it was dam windy there too. lots of people used them, and used other hire bikes from hotels etc.

Here some that we saw in Ammens(wrong spelling:sad:) France, with me and my dad pictured!(My dad doing a touristy pose, im trying to sneek in the picture)

These were held in place by a huge magnet, and when you wanted to hire them, you put money in i think(either money in the box by the stand or you got a card/key to put in the machine, i cant remember now) and you could use the bike. When your done with it, you can put it back anywhere, so you could basicly ride from one place, over to another and leave the bike there.
Great idea.
Bikes look rather heavy though!

the helsinki ones just scream 'tourist' really don't they, that and "you'll look like a gimp if you steal one"

yes, but some of the other bikes the locals ride are crazy, i didnt have time to take a snap of some of them. I think the French ones are simular to the ones borris want? if people use them, then its a good idea ;)

They are basically the same as the Velib' bikes in Paris. They are heavy- 22 kg- but they go well enough. If it is like the Paris scheme you can buy a pass using a credit/ debit card. There's a thread here

yes the road bikes look ok for hire bikes. How did they handle?

I saw this in Scotland, felt sorry for the people riding it in the pooring heavy continuous rain. Saw them a few times.
